Way back in the day, my first elk—freezer meat for the winter—was a pretty big deal. “Free organic meat for the taking,” some might think, but that was far from the truth.
The breakdown:
New truck $5,300
Hunt license $45
Rifle (gift)
Ammo $15
Vacation days 5
Game gambrel $10
Chest freezer $120
Lots of labor in the field and at home
Total 1973 dollars $5,490
Cost about $27 per pound (when market sirloin steak was $1.11 lb)
Now, upon completion of the greenhouse (soon) which has been under construction for the last two years, using similar comparisons, I figure the first harvest of lettuce and kale will cost about $350 per pound. Yeah, but it’s organic! Yummy.
😂😂I hear ya Cal! Haven’t added up my expenses for my organic community garden plot because I know it won’t be cheap.
